Article 7

Paternal Lineage Pathway

  • Trace lineage to male ancestor born in Luxembourg
  • Luxembourgish last name passed father to son
  • Or applies through your mother

Article 23

Dual Citizenship by Option

  • Or grandparent is Luxembourgish citizen
  • Requires in-person trip to Luxembourg

Article 7/23

Combination Process

  • Combines both Article 7 and Article 23
  • For those who don't qualify through either alone
  • Must travel to Luxembourg to complete process

Key Requirements:

  • You can trace your family line back to a male ancestor born in Luxembourg

  • This pathway requires unbroken paternal lineage
  • Name changes or adoptions may affect eligibility
  • Detailed genealogical documentation required

Article 23 – Dual Citizenship by Option

Key Requirements:

  • An individual whose parent or adoptive parent is or was a Luxembourgish citizen
  • OR, an individual whose grandparent is or was a Luxembourgish citizen
  • The citizenship was not passed on to their parent

  • In-person trip to Luxembourg required to complete the process
  • Single-step process for most applicants
  • Can retain existing citizenship

Article 7/23 Combination Process

Key Requirements:

  • Have a living or deceased parent or grandparent with all-male lineage back to a Luxembourgish ancestor
  • This ancestor qualifies under the Article 7 process
  • You cannot apply through Article 7 or Article 23 alone
